Monkey Bite Gives Man Rare Virus

By Criss

37-year-old man is in critical condition after being bitten by a monkey and contracting a rare but potentially lethal virus. The incident occurred during a visit to Kam Shan Country Park in Hong Kong, a park known for its conservation of wild macaque monkeys. Here are the details:

  1. The Encounter:

    • The man was wounded by wild macaque monkeys during his visit to Kam Shan Country Park in late February.
    • On March 21, he was admitted to the hospital with a fever and “decreased conscious level.”
    • As of April 3, he remains in the ICU listed in critical condition.
  2. The Virus:

    • The man tested positive for B virus, also known as herpes B virus or herpesvirus simiae.
    • B virus is a common infection in macaques, usually causing asymptomatic or mild disease.
    • Infections in humans are extremely rare, but when they occur, they are often severe and deadly.
    • The virus can move to the brain and spinal cord, causing brain damage, nerve damage, and death.
    • Untreated infections in humans are fatal in about 70 percent of cases.
  3. Historical Context:

    • B virus was discovered in 1932.
    • Only 50 human infections have been documented as of 2019, with 21 deaths reported.
    • In one case, a researcher was infected and died after bodily fluid from an infected monkey splashed into her eye.
  4. Precautions:

    • Despite the presence of macaques around Hong Kong, this case is the first known B virus infection documented there.
    • Health officials recommend:
      • Keeping a distance from wild monkeys.
      • Not feeding or touching them.
      • Washing any bites or scratches immediately and seeking medical attention.

Remember, while monkey encounters can be fascinating, it’s crucial to prioritize safety when interacting with wildlife. Stay informed and take necessary precautions to prevent rare but serious infections like B virus. 🐒🦠
